Whirlpool Control Panel Pressure Switch Replacement - $75 Each
Is your Whirlpool washer acting up? On most Whirlpool machines there is a small pressure switch sitting on the control board whose only job is to tell the washer how much water is in the tub. It reads air pressure through a hose that runs down to the bottom of the basket. When that switch fails, the board stops getting an honest answer, and the machine starts doing things that make no sense.
Here is the part that bothers me. That switch is $75 to replace, and I have watched people haul a perfectly good washer to the curb over it. Most shops will not open a control board at all. They quote a whole new board, the board is backordered or costs more than the machine is worth, and the answer turns into buy a new washer. At Underwoods Appliance we repair the board itself.
I spent years as a Whirlpool and GE technician before I opened the shop, and I trained at Fred's Appliance Academy in Ohio. That background is why this repair is on the menu here and almost nowhere else. We install new pressure switches on your existing board, then return to install it and run a recalibration so the washer reads water levels correctly again. Instead of replacing your washer, let us repair it for a fraction of the cost.
Signs of a Failed Pressure Switch
These are the three complaints I hear most often, and all three trace back to the same little switch on the control board. If your washer is doing any of them, do not throw the machine away just yet.
The drain pump runs and will not shut off
You hear the pump humming long after the tub is empty, sometimes even when the lid is open or the cycle is done. The switch is stuck telling the board there is still water in the basket, so the board keeps the pump running looking for water that is already gone.
The washer overflows
Water keeps coming in past the point it should stop, and you end up with a wet laundry room floor. This is the opposite failure. The switch never reports that the tub is full, so the board never closes the water valve. This one is worth calling about right away before it damages your flooring.
The washer will not fill enough before it agitates
The machine starts working the load on a few inches of water and the clothes come out dry in spots and poorly rinsed. The switch is reading a full tub when the tub is nearly empty, so the board moves on to agitation early.

How the Repair Works

We diagnose and pull the control board
I come out, run the machine, and confirm the pressure switch is actually the problem before anything comes apart. If it turns out to be the hose, the valve, or the board itself, you hear that straight from me. If the switch is the fault, I take the board back to the shop.

We install new pressure switches on the board - $75 each
The new switches go onto your existing board on the bench. This is board-level work that most shops in this part of Iowa simply will not take on, and it is why a repair that would otherwise cost you a washer comes in at $75 a switch.

We return to install the board and recalibrate the machine
I bring the board back, put it in, and run the recalibration so the washer learns its water levels again. Skipping that last step is how a good board still gives you a bad wash, so it is part of the job every time.
What It Costs
Pressure switch replacement on the control board is $75 each. The service call, which includes the diagnostic, is $110 within 35 miles of the shop and $125 at 36 miles and up. Repair cost is in addition to the diagnostic cost.
If you proceed with the repair, $50 of the initial trip and diagnostic charge is credited toward the final parts and labor cost when we return to complete the repair. Parts are sold at cost with no markup, and labor runs roughly half of typical rates. Service prices subject to change.
